Q&A with Filmmaker Andrew Jarecki

Filmmaker ANDREW JARECKI was nominated for an Oscar for his first film, the riveting documentary CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS. His second film, ALL GOOD THINGS, is a narrative feature starring Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, and Frank Langella, and will be released in March. Andrew has taken a number of workshops with me, plus one-on-one consultation pre-, during, and post-production for ALL GOOD THINGS. He came to our studio on Monday October 19, 2009 at 7:30 PM.

Andrew is still in post for ALL GOOD THINGS, and lives in New York, so it was amazingly generous of him to fit a visit to our Studio into one of his trips to LA. I’ve seen screenings of the film and, believe me, you won’t want to miss it when it arrives in theaters in March.

Andrew brought clips from his upcoming film ALL GOOD THINGS - and talked about casting sessions, his seven week rehearsal process with Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, getting along with financiers. He also answered lots of questions about his first film CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS. He was a huge source of invaluable information - but the moment-by-moment evidence of his engagement, curiosity and passion at every level of the process was the most indelible lesson.

Andrew was very generous with his time after the formal Q&A, and stayed a long time to answer people's many questions. He has promised to come back after the release of ALL GOOD THINGS. I’ll include below a few quotes from emails I received from people who attended:

“He has such an incredible purity in his vision, and such a captivating and refreshing honesty in his language and storytelling, that I was touched on so many creative levels. I found a tremendous amount of inspiration and motivation from the evening's dialogue, mainly as an actress but even also as a novice documentarian (I have made 2 short docs in the past few years in Africa and loved every incredibly challenging minute of it!). What a remarkable filmmaker -- I can't wait to catch 'All Good Things' next spring!”

“I had to thank you again for bringing in Andrew. What an incredible night. So much valuable information and such a pleasure listening to him speak. I wish the release was next month!”

“Thank you for the wonderful evening with Andrew Jarecki! We enjoyed it thoroughly...so sorry we could not take the opportunity to remain after the session and meet and greet. Andrew's presence, experience, and generous, insightful sharing was everything you promised and more. So much to take away from the evening that affected both of us. Andrew's perspective on how simply ‘showing up,’ being fully present, open and available in all situations can create opportunity and ‘gift’ back to you in unexpected and incredible ways should be embraced daily.”

  • “I took a seminar with an acting teacher named Judith Weston. I learned a key insight to character. She believed that all well-drawn characters have a spine, and the idea is that the character has an inner motor, a dominant, unconscious goal that they’re striving for, an itch that they can’t scratch. I took to this like a duck to water.”

ANDREW STANTON [from his Feb 2012 TED Talk] writer-director, FINDING DORY, WALL-E, FINDING NEMO, A BUG’S LIFE; director, BETTER CALL SAUL, STRANGER THINGS; writer, TOY STORY, TOY STORY 2, TOY STORY 3
  • "Judith's method is wonderful because it is practical. She has given me numerous tools to solve problems on the set and to earn the trust of actors. Her classes and her book are invaluable resources to any director."

  • "Thank you for teaching me how to direct actors. Taking your classes made me believe I could direct. Taking your classes gave me a base, a foundation, a framework to find my own style. To step out on faith. I'm forever grateful. Love and respect to you, magnificent Judith Weston."
